Method

For the tea

1

Heat water

Pour 2 cups of cold water into a small saucepan. Place over medium-high heat and bring just to a boil (small bubbles, steam rising) — about 3–5 minutes depending on stove.

2

Steep tea

If using loose tea: add 1.5 teaspoons of black tea leaves to a teapot or infuser. If using a tea bag: add the tea bag to a cup. Pour the boiling water over the tea and let steep for 3–5 minutes for a standard-strength cup (shorter for lighter, longer for stronger).

3

Warm the milk (optional)

While tea steeps, warm 1 cup of milk in a separate small saucepan over low heat until steaming but not boiling (about 2–3 minutes). If you prefer no milk, skip this step.

4

Combine and sweeten

Remove the tea leaves or tea bag. Pour the steeped tea into your cup (if you warmed milk separately, pour the milk into the cup now). Stir in 1 teaspoon sugar, or honey/lemon to taste. Taste and adjust sweetness or milk amount.

For serving

5

Place a strainer over the cup if you used loose leaves. Pour the tea through to catch leaves. Stir with a teaspoon and serve while hot.
