Method
Burger
- 1
Form patty
Gently shape the ground beef into a small patty about 3.5 inches (9 cm) across and roughly 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) thick. Avoid overworking the meat to keep the patty tender. Make a slight indentation in the center with your thumb so it cooks evenly.
- 2
Season
Season both sides of the patty with the salt and black pepper.
- 3
Cook patty
Heat a nonstick skillet or small griddle over medium heat. Add the 1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil and swirl to coat. Once hot (a light shimmer), add the patty. Cook for 2.5–3 minutes on the first side without pressing. Flip and cook another 2–3 minutes for a medium doneness; cook a bit longer if you prefer well-done. Internal temperature should reach 160°F (71°C) for ground beef safety.
- 4
Add cheese (if making cheese burger)
If making the cheeseburger, place the American cheese slice on the patty during the last 30–45 seconds of cooking. Cover the pan briefly with a lid to help the cheese melt.

Fries

Oven method (recommended for kids): Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Spread the frozen fries in a single layer on a baking sheet, toss lightly with 1 teaspoon vegetable oil, and bake for 12–18 minutes, turning once halfway through, until golden and crisp. Sprinkle with 1/8 teaspoon salt while hot.
- 8
Air-fryer method: Preheat air fryer to 400°F (200°C). Place fries in the basket in a single layer and air-fry for 8–12 minutes, shaking once, until crisp. Season with salt.
- 9
Stovetop frying (if using fresh fries): Heat 1/4 inch oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Fry fries in batches for 3–5 minutes until golden. Drain on paper towels and season with salt.
Fruit Option
- 10
If serving fruit instead of fries, wash and slice the apple into thin, kid-friendly slices and toss with a little lemon juice to prevent browning, or rinse and drain seedless grapes. Serve about 1/2 cup per child alongside the burger.
