Cranberry-Watermelon Base

Method

Cranberry-Watermelon Base

  1. 1

    Prep watermelon

Place 4 cups of roughly cubed seedless watermelon into a blender. Remove large seeds if present.

  2. 2

    Blend

Add 1 cup unsweetened cranberry juice, 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice, and 2 teaspoons granulated sugar (or equivalent simple syrup) to the blender with the watermelon. Blend on high until completely smooth, about 30–45 seconds.

  3. 3

    Strain (optional)

If you prefer a smoother drink, pour the blended mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into a large bowl or pitcher, pressing on the solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Discard solids.

  4. 4

    Chill briefly

Taste the strained mixture and adjust sweetness or lime if needed. Chill in the refrigerator for 10–15 minutes while you prepare the garnish if you want it very cold, or continue immediately for a slightly more vibrant flavor.

Sparkle & Finish

  1. 5

    Prepare glass rims (optional)

If using a rim, rub a lime slice around the edge of 4 serving glasses and dip rims into coarse salt or sugar (2 tsp) spread on a small plate.

  2. 6

    Muddle mint

Lightly slap 6 of the mint leaves between your palms to release aroma, then place them in a large pitcher or individual glasses and gently muddle 6 leaves with the chilled cranberry-watermelon base (about 1–2 minutes) to release flavor without tearing the leaves to bits.

  3. 7

    Combine and chill

Add the strained cranberry-watermelon mixture to the pitcher with muddled mint. Add ice to the pitcher or to individual glasses (about 4 cups total divided). Stir gently to combine.

  4. 8

    Add sparkle

Just before serving, pour 2 cups cold sparkling water or club soda into the pitcher and gently stir to preserve carbonation. Taste and adjust: add more sparkling water for a lighter drink or more cranberry juice for tartness.

  5. 9

    Serve

Fill each prepared glass with ice if not already filled, spoon a little extra muddled mint into each glass if desired, and pour the Cranberry Watermelon Splash evenly into 4 glasses. Garnish each glass with a lime slice and a sprig of mint.

  6. 10

    Storage

If you need to store leftovers, keep the non-carbonated base (without sparkling water and ice) in a sealed container refrigerated for up to 48 hours. Add sparkling water just before serving.
