Method
Garnish Preparation
- 1
Prepare glass rim
If you want a cocoa-rimmed martini glass, pour 1/2 tsp simple syrup onto a small plate and 1 tsp cocoa powder onto another. Lightly wet the rim of a chilled martini or coupe glass with the simple syrup, then dip the rim into the cocoa powder to coat evenly. Set the glass aside in the refrigerator or freezer to chill while you make the cocktail.
- 2
Optional chocolate drizzle
If using chocolate syrup for interior drizzle, drizzle about 1 tablespoon of chocolate syrup in a spiral inside the chilled glass. Return glass to freezer or set aside upright so the drizzle stays in place.
- 3
Prepare shavings
Finely grate or shave about 1 tsp dark chocolate and keep ready for garnish.
Cocktail Assembly
- 4
Chill and measure
Fill a cocktail shaker three-quarters full with ice (approximately 1 cup). Measure and add 2.5 oz Wheatley Chocolate Vodka, 0.5 oz chilled neutral vodka (optional for proof balance), 0.5 oz dark crème de cacao, 0.25 oz chocolate liqueur (optional), 0.5 oz heavy cream or half-and-half, and 0.25 oz simple syrup or 0.25 oz chocolate syrup into the shaker.
- 5
Shake
Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold and the mixture is slightly frothy. The vigorous shaking emulsifies the cream and chills the drink quickly, creating a silky texture.
- 6
Double strain and serve
Remove the chilled glass from the refrigerator/freezer. Using a fine strainer (or a Hawthorne strainer and a small sieve), double-strain the cocktail into the prepared martini glass to remove ice shards and ensure a smooth surface.
- 7
Garnish and finish
Sprinkle the grated dark chocolate over the foam of the martini. If desired, add a light dusting of cocoa powder over the top for extra aroma. Serve immediately.
