1

Chill glass

Place a chilled old-fashioned or coupe glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail so the drink stays cold longer.

2

Combine ingredients

Add rye whiskey (2 oz), Punt e Mes (3/4 oz), Cynar (1/2 oz), and 3 dashes of orange bitters into a mixing glass.

3

Add ice

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes. Use enough ice so the liquid is well chilled and dilution will be steady (about 4 large cubes).

4

Stir

Stir the mixture gently for 20–30 seconds (about 30–40 revolutions) until the exterior of the mixing glass becomes very cold and the drink is properly diluted and integrated.

5

Prepare glass

If you chilled your serving glass with ice water, empty it now. Add one large clear ice cube if you prefer the drink on the rocks; otherwise, leave it chilled and dry for a neat pour.

6

Strain

Using a julep or hawthorne strainer, double-strain the cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled serving glass (over the large ice cube if using).

7

Express garnish

Hold an orange peel skin-side down over the drink and give a firm twist to express oils across the surface, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass as garnish.

8

Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy the interplay of the rye's spice, Punt e Mes' rounded sweetness with bitter backbone, and Cynar's vegetal bittersweetness, finished by bright orange oil.
