Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Select an Old Fashioned (rocks) glass. Chill briefly by filling with ice and setting aside while you mix the cocktail, or place in the freezer for 5–10 minutes.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass, add 1.25 oz (approximately 2 tablespoons) Santa Teresa 1796 Solera Rum, 0.25 oz maraschino liqueur, 0.5 oz Martini Fiero, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and 3 dashes of Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Stir and chill

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes. Stir gently but thoroughly for 20–30 seconds (about 20–25 full strokes) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted — this yields a balanced Old Fashioned-style cocktail.

  4. 4

    Prepare serving glass

Discard the ice from the chilled Old Fashioned glass. Place one large ice cube or sphere in the glass.

  5. 5

    Strain

Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, double-strain the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared serving glass over the large ice cube.

  6. 6

    Express and garnish

Express the oils of an orange peel over the surface of the drink by holding the peel with the outer side facing down and giving it a firm squeeze to release the oils. Run the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop it into the drink. Optionally, add a Luxardo cherry on a pick and rest it on the ice.

  7. 7

    Serve

Serve immediately with a short stirring spoon on the side. Encourage sipping slowly to appreciate the interplay of the rich solera rum, bright Martini Fiero, and the maraschino's nuttiness.
