Base Spirits

Method

Prepare Base

  1. 1

    Chill glassware

Place the shot glass in the freezer or fill with ice water to chill while you assemble ingredients (about 2–5 minutes).

  2. 2

Measure and add 3 tsp chilled vodka, 2 tsp coffee liqueur, and 2 tsp Irish cream liqueur into the cocktail shaker. These proportions yield a balanced 1.5 oz shot base.

Add Flavor Variation

  1. 3

Choose one flavored variation to customize the shot. Add 1 tsp of the selected flavored ingredient to the shaker: peppermint liqueur for a minty bite, orange liqueur for citrus brightness, hazelnut liqueur for nutty warmth, or 1 tsp cooled espresso for intensified coffee character.

  2. 4

If you prefer a layered presentation (visible strata of Irish cream over coffee liqueur), skip shaking and instead layer: pour coffee liqueur (2 tsp) into chilled shot glass, then slowly over the back of a teaspoon pour vodka (3 tsp), then very slowly pour Irish cream (2 tsp) to sit on top. For a smooth, integrated shot continue to the shaking step.

Shake or Layer

  1. 5

    Shaken (creamy, integrated)

Add ice to the shaker (enough to chill but not over-dilute), secure the lid, and shake vigorously for 8–12 seconds until the outside is frosty. Strain through the fine-mesh strainer into the chilled shot glass.

  2. 6

    Layered (visual effect)

If layering, ensure the base liquids are poured slowly and use the back of a spoon close to the glass rim. Layer in order of density: coffee liqueur first, vodka second (slower pour over spoon), Irish cream last. Add the chosen 1 tsp flavor only if it will not disturb layers (ideally add to the middle layer).

Garnish & Serve

  1. 7

Lightly dust the top with a pinch of cocoa powder or instant espresso for aroma and contrast. Optionally add a small sprinkle of chocolate shavings or a mint leaf for the peppermint variation.

  2. 8

Serve immediately. One assembled shot yields one serving (about 1.5 oz / 45 ml). If making multiple at once, multiply ingredient quantities accordingly and prepare in batches to keep shots fresh and chilled.
