Cheeseburgers

Method

Cheeseburgers

  1. 1

    Make the mixture

Place 0.25 lb lean ground beef in a small bowl. Add 1 tablespoon fine dry breadcrumbs, 1 teaspoon milk, 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1/8 teaspoon salt, and 1/16 teaspoon black pepper. Gently mix with your fingers or a fork until just combined — avoid overworking so patties stay tender.

  2. 2

    Form patty

Divide the mixture into one portion and shape into a small, slightly wider-than-bun patty about 1/2-inch thick. Make a very shallow dimple in the center with your thumb to keep it from puffing while cooking.

  3. 3

    Cook patty

Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil and swirl to coat. When the pan is hot (a drop of water should sizzle), add the patty. Cook undisturbed for 2 to 2 1/2 minutes until the bottom is browned. Flip and cook another 2 minutes. For well-done, cook an additional 30–60 seconds. Internal temperature should reach 160°F (71°C) for ground beef.

  4. 4

    Add cheese

Place 1 slice of cheddar cheese on the cooked patty during the last 30–45 seconds of cooking. Cover the pan briefly with a lid or an inverted bowl to help the cheese melt quickly.

  5. 5

    Toast bun

While the cheese melts, spread 1/2 teaspoon softened butter on the cut sides of 1 small hamburger bun. Remove the patty to a plate and wipe the pan if needed. Return the pan to medium-low heat and place the bun cut-side down for about 30–45 seconds until lightly golden and warmed.

  6. 6

    Assemble

Place the cheesy patty on the bottom bun. Add optional 2 pickle slices, shredded lettuce (about 1/4 cup), and 1 teaspoon ketchup and/or 1/2 teaspoon mustard to the top bun as desired. Close and serve immediately.

Optional Toppings / Sides

  1. 7

If serving carrot sticks, wash and cut raw carrots into kid-friendly sticks (about 1/4 cup). Arrange on the plate alongside the burger. Offer ketchup for dipping if desired.

  2. 8

If including pickles, place 2 slices on the burger as noted above. Adjust condiments to the child's preference.
