Hugo Cocktail

Method

Hugo Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass and mint

Choose a large wine glass or stemmed balloon glass. Add the fresh mint leaves to the bottom of the glass. Gently clap the mint between your palms once to release aroma, then lightly bruise the leaves in the glass with your fingers or the back of a spoon—don’t shred them.

  2. 2

    Add lime

Cut the half lime into a small wedge. Squeeze the wedge over the mint into the glass to release about 1/2 to 3/4 teaspoon of juice, then drop the squeezed wedge into the glass for extra flavor.

  3. 3

    Ice and liqueur

Fill the glass about three-quarters full with ice cubes (approximately 1 cup). Pour the elderflower liqueur (and optional elderflower syrup if using) over the ice and mint.

  4. 4

    Add Prosecco

Slowly pour the chilled prosecco (about 6 fl oz) into the glass. Pouring slowly helps preserve bubbles and avoids overflow.

  5. 5

    Top with soda

Add about 1 fl oz of chilled soda water to finish. Stir gently once with a long spoon to combine flavors without flattening the bubbles.

  6. 6

    Garnish and serve

Garnish with an additional small mint sprig tucked into the glass and, if desired, a thin lime wheel on the rim. Serve immediately while cold and effervescent.
