Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Measure & Combine

Chill a rocks glass by filling it with ice and setting it aside. In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker, add 1 oz gin, 1 oz Campari, and 1 oz sweet (house) vermouth.

  2. 2

    Stir

Fill the mixing glass with about 6 large ice cubes. Stir gently but steadily for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full strokes) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted — the mixing glass should develop a slight frost on the outside.

  3. 3

    Prepare Glass

Discard the ice from the chilled rocks glass. Add fresh ice (about 4 large cubes) to the glass for serving.

  4. 4

    Strain & Serve

Strain the chilled Negroni from the mixing glass into the prepared rocks glass over the fresh ice.

  5. 5

    Garnish

Express the oils of one orange peel over the surface of the cocktail by holding the peel skin-side down about 3 inches above the drink and giving it a firm squeeze. Rub the rim of the glass with the peel, then drop the peel into the glass as garnish.

  6. 6

Serve immediately. Optional: for a slightly softer Negroni, reduce Campari to 3/4 oz and increase vermouth to 1 1/4 oz (or vice versa to adjust bitterness/sweetness to taste).
