Negroni Chinato Cocktail

Method

Negroni Chinato Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass and ice

Select a rocks glass (lowball). Fill the glass with large ice cubes to chill while you mix the drink.

  2. 2

    Combine spirits

In a mixing glass or shaker filled with ice, pour 1 oz gin, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 1 oz Campari, and 1/2 oz Chinato. The extra Chinato adds quinine, bitter-spice and aromatics that distinguish this variant from a classic Negroni.

  3. 3

    Stir to chill and dilute

Stir the mixture gently with a bar spoon for about 20–30 seconds (15–25 full turns) until well chilled and slightly diluted. If you prefer a slightly lower proof, add about 1/4 oz cold water during stirring and stir for an extra 5 seconds to integrate.

  4. 4

    Strain and serve

Discard the ice from the chilled rocks glass, place 1–3 fresh large ice cubes into the glass, and strain the mixed cocktail over the ice using a julep or hawthorne strainer.

  5. 5

    Garnish

Express the oils of an orange peel over the surface by holding the peel skin-side down over the drink and giving it a quick twist to spray oils across the surface. Rub the peel along the rim (optional) and drop it into the glass. Alternatively, flame the orange peel briefly to add smoky citrus notes, or add an orange slice as a visual garnish.

  6. 6

Serve immediately. The Negroni Chinato is best enjoyed slightly cold, with a balance of bitter, sweet and quinine-spiced aromatics. Sip slowly.
