Equipment
Method
Prepare filtered water
- 1
Filter and chill
If you have a countertop or pitcher filter, run tap water through the filter into a clean container. Measure 4 cups of the filtered water. Chill the filtered water in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes so it is very cold — cold water holds carbonation better.
- 2
If you don't have a filter, use bottled spring water or previously chilled boiled-and-cooled water.
Carbonate the water
- 3
Using a home carbonator
Pour the chilled filtered water into the carbonator bottle up to the fill line (about 4 cups). Follow the manufacturer's instructions to carbonate — usually one to three short pulses of CO2. After carbonating, gently invert the bottle once or twice to distribute bubbles; avoid shaking vigorously to prevent foaming.
- 4
Using pre-carbonated sparkling water
If using store-bought sparkling water, pour 4 cups of chilled sparkling water into a clean pitcher. Keep it covered and cold until serving to preserve fizz.
- 5
Alternative: soda siphon
Fill the siphon with 4 cups of chilled filtered water, charge with the appropriate CO2 cartridge, and follow siphon instructions. Dispense gently into a pitcher or glass.
Assemble and flavor (optional)
- 6
If you want plain filtered sparkling water, skip to final serve. For light flavoring, add any of the optional items to the pitcher or individual glasses.
- 7
- 8
Herb and cucumber
Bruise 3–4 mint leaves lightly between your fingers to release aroma and add to the pitcher or glass with cucumber slices. Let sit 1–2 minutes before serving for a subtle infusion.
- 9
Slightly sweet or vanilla
If you prefer a touch of sweetness or vanilla, add 1 tsp simple syrup or honey, or 1 tsp vanilla extract, to 1 cup of sparkling water in a separate cup and stir until dissolved, then gently combine with the remaining sparkling water. Taste and adjust; adding sweetener to a small portion first minimizes CO2 loss.
Serve
- 10
Fill glasses with ice if desired (about 1/4 to 1/2 cup per serving). Pour the chilled filtered sparkling water gently into glasses to preserve bubbles. If flavored in a pitcher, pour carefully to avoid disturbing solids (citrus, herbs).
- 11
Storage and tips
- 12
If storing, keep sparkling water in a sealed bottle or soda siphon in the refrigerator and consume within 24–48 hours for best fizz. Avoid leaving uncovered at room temperature, which dissipates CO2 faster.
- 13
Use very cold water and chilled vessels to maximize carbonation retention. Add strong flavors in small amounts to avoid altering the clean taste of the filtered sparkling water.
