Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure it stays cold.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker, add the dry gin (1.5 oz), white vermouth (1.0 oz), elderflower liqueur (0.5 oz), fresh lemon juice (0.5 oz), and simple syrup (0.25 oz).

  3. 3

    Add ice and shake

Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the shaker is very cold to the touch and the outside is frosted.

  4. 4

    Fine-strain

Empty the chilled glass of any ice or water. Double-strain the contents of the shaker into the chilled coupe or a rocks glass filled with fresh ice using a Hawthorne and a fine mesh strainer to remove small ice shards and pulp.

  5. 5

    Top (optional)

If you prefer a lighter, more spritz-like aperitivo, top with 1.5 oz chilled dry sparkling wine or with 1.5 oz chilled soda water. Gently stir once with a bar spoon to integrate.

Garnish

  1. 6

Express the lemon twist over the surface of the drink by holding the twist with the exterior (zest) facing down and giving it a quick squeeze so the oils spray onto the drink, then rub the rim of the glass with the twist and place it on the rim or float it on top.

  2. 7

Gently slap the mint sprig between your palms to release the aroma and lay it on top of the drink as a garnish without muddling—this preserves the fresh aromatic lift of the aperitivo.
