Method
Preparation
- 1
Chill glass
Place an Old Fashioned glass or rocks glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.
- 2
Measure ingredients
Measure 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.5 oz cognac, 0.25 oz aged rum, and 0.25 oz demerara syrup. Prepare bitters at hand.
Build & stir
- 3
Discard the chilling ice water (if used) and add a large ice cube to the chilled glass.
- 4
In a mixing glass add the rye whiskey, cognac, aged rum, demerara syrup, 3 dashes Angostura bitters and 2 dashes orange bitters.
- 5
- 6
Strain the cocktail over the large ice cube in the chilled rocks glass.
Finish & garnish
- 7
Take the orange peel and hold it with the exterior (zest) facing down over the glass. Express the peel over the drink by pinching to release oils, then rub the rim with the peel to transfer oils and aroma.
- 8
Drop the expressed orange peel into the drink as garnish and add one Luxardo or brandied cherry on a pick or dropped into the glass.
- 9
Serve immediately. Sip slowly — this is a complex house-style Old Fashioned with layers of spice, fruit and oak.
