Cocktail Base

Garnish & Tools

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a rocks glass in the freezer or fill with ice water to chill while assembling the cocktail.

  2. 2

If you don’t have demerara syrup ready: combine equal parts demerara sugar and hot water, stir until dissolved, cool before using.

Build & Shake

  1. 3

In a cocktail shaker, add the aged rum (2 oz), blackstrap rum (0.5 oz), mezcal (0.5 oz), cold espresso (0.5 oz), coffee liqueur (0.25 oz), demerara syrup (0.5 oz), coconut cream (0.5 oz), heavy cream (1 oz), vanilla paste (0.25 tsp) and the chocolate bitters (2 dashes).

  2. 4

Add the food‑grade activated charcoal solution or charcoal tincture (0.25 tsp). This will deepen the color and give the drink the signature 'dust cloud' appearance; stir briefly to incorporate (do not over-aerate).

  3. 5

Add ice to the shaker until nearly full. Cap and shake vigorously for 12–18 seconds to properly chill, dilute, and emulsify the creams and spirits, creating a silky texture.

Strain & Finish

  1. 6

Discard the ice or water from the chilled rocks glass and place one large ice cube in the glass.

  2. 7

Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled rocks glass over the large ice cube using both the shaker strainer and a fine strainer to ensure a smooth, creamy surface.

  3. 8

Express the orange oil over the surface by holding the orange twist about 2–3 inches above the drink and giving it a firm squeeze so the oils spray onto the cocktail; rub the twist on the rim and drop it into the glass.

  4. 9

Lightly sprinkle a tiny pinch of flaky sea salt across the top to heighten chocolate and coffee notes.

  5. 10

Using a small spoon or micro-sifter, dust the center of the cocktail surface with a delicate 1/4 teaspoon of edible silver dust or very finely sifted cocoa powder to create the 'heavy metal dust cloud' visual. Keep the dusting minimal so the drink remains creamy and drinkable.

  6. 11

If desired, finish with a final whisper (one quick spray) of mezcal smoke by briefly waving a lit cinnamon stick or using a smoking cloche; do this immediately before service for an aromatic, metallic-smoke accent.

Serving & Notes

  1. 12

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy the layered textures—smoky mezcal, deep rum richness, coffee and chocolate complexity, and a silky cream finish. Adjust sweetness and cream ratio to taste in future batches.

  2. 13

All ingredients listed are food-grade and safe for consumption. If using activated charcoal, do so sparingly (as directed) and avoid if the guest is on medications where charcoal may interfere with absorption.
