Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a chilled rocks glass or coupe in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure the drink stays cold when served.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled with plenty of ice, add 2 oz bourbon, 0.5 oz dry vermouth, 0.25 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz orange curaçao, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 1 dash orange bitters, and optionally 0.25 tsp simple syrup if you prefer a touch more sweetness.

  3. 3

    Stir until well chilled

Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 25–30 seconds (about 20–30 full turns) until the mixing glass feels very cold and the outside is slightly frosted. Stirring chills and dilutes gently while keeping the drink clear.

  4. 4

    Prepare garnish

Discard ice/water from the chilled serving glass. Using a vegetable peeler or small knife, cut a wide strip of orange peel. Express the oils by holding the peel skin-side down over the glass and giving it a firm twist to release the citrus oils onto the drink.

  5. 5

    Strain and serve

Double-strain the cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled rocks glass over one large ice cube or into the chilled coupe without ice, depending on preference. Place the expressed orange peel into or over the rim of the glass as garnish.

  6. 6

    Final touch

Optionally add a final dash of orange bitters on top. Serve immediately.
