Preparation

1

Chill glass (optional)

Place a rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or add ice to the glass to chill while you prepare the cocktail, then discard the chilling ice before serving.

2

Combine ingredients

Fill a mixing glass or shaker with plenty of ice. Pour in 2 oz Maker's Mark bourbon and 1 oz sweet vermouth. Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

3

Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture for about 30–45 seconds (20–30 full rotations) until properly chilled and lightly diluted. Stirring keeps the drink clear and smooth.

4

Prepare glass and garnish

If you chilled the glass with ice, discard that ice now. Add one large ice cube (or several large cubes) to the rocks glass. Express an orange peel over the drink by holding it skin-side down above the glass and giving it a firm twist to release the oils, then rub the peel along the rim and drop it in as garnish.

5

Strain and serve

Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the stirred cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube. Optionally place a brandied or Luxardo cherry on a pick and rest it on the ice. Serve immediately.
