Prepare glass
Chill an old-fashioned or rocks glass by filling it with ice and setting it aside while you mix the cocktail.
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz Hennessy, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.5 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.
Add ice and shake
Add about 6 ice cubes to the shaker. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes cold and slightly frosted.
Prepare serving glass
Discard the ice used to chill the serving glass and add 2–3 fresh ice cubes.
Garnish
Express the oils of an orange twist over the drink by holding the twist skin-side down over the glass and giving it a sharp fold to release the oils, then drop the twist into the drink as garnish.
Enjoy
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the balance of cognac, citrus, and bitters.
