Tuna Salad

Method

Tuna Salad

1

Prepare tuna

Open and drain the canned tuna well. Place the drained tuna in a medium mixing bowl and use a fork to flake it into bite-sized pieces, breaking up any large chunks.

2

Combine wet ingredients

Add the mayonnaise (6 tbs) and Dijon mustard (1 tsp) to the flaked tuna. Stir until the mixture is creamy and mostly homogenous.

3

Add vegetables and seasonings

Fold in the finely diced celery (1/2 cup), minced red onion (2 tbs), and sweet pickle relish (1 tbs). Add the lemon juice (1 tbs) and chopped parsley (2 tbs). Season with 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper, and optional 1/4 tsp celery salt if using. Taste and adjust seasoning — add more lemon for brightness, more mayo for creaminess, or more salt/pepper as needed.

4

Chill (optional)

For best flavor meld, cover the bowl and chill the tuna salad for 15–30 minutes in the refrigerator. If short on time, you can assemble immediately.

Sandwich Assembly

5

Prepare bread

Lightly spread butter or a thin layer of mayonnaise (about 1/2 tbs per slice) on one side of each bread slice. This prevents sogginess and adds flavor.

6

Assemble sandwiches

Place 1 lettuce leaf on four of the bread slices (buttered/mayo side down). Divide the tuna salad evenly into four portions (about 3 oz tuna mixture per sandwich). Mound one portion of tuna salad onto each lettuce-lined slice. Top each with 2 tomato slices and 2 pickle slices if using.

7

Finish and serve

Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered/mayo side up. Press gently, then cut each sandwich diagonally or in half if desired. Serve immediately, or wrap and refrigerate up to 24 hours for later.

8

Storage

Store leftover tuna salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Assembled sandwiches are best eaten within a few hours to avoid soggy bread.
