Method

Cook Sausage

1

Preheat pan

Place a 8-10 inch nonstick or stainless steel skillet over medium heat. Add 1 teaspoon cooking oil and let it warm for about 30 seconds until shimmering.

2

Cook sausage patty

Add the sausage patty (or crumbled sausage) to the heated pan. Cook for 3-4 minutes on the first side without moving so it browns, then flip. If using a link, cook similarly turning frequently so it cooks through. Continue cooking 3-4 more minutes until internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) for pork or until no pink remains. If crumbled, break up and stir while browning until cooked through. Remove sausage to a plate and cover loosely with foil to keep warm.

Toast

3

Toast bread

While the sausage cooks or immediately after removing it, toast 1 slice of bread in a toaster to your desired doneness (medium recommended). Alternatively, place the bread in the same skillet over medium-low heat and toast 1-2 minutes per side, adding 1/2 teaspoon butter to the bread before toasting if desired.

4

Butter toast

Spread 1 teaspoon butter (or 1/2 teaspoon if using additional optional butter) on the hot toasted bread so it melts evenly.

Cook Egg

5

Prepare skillet

Reduce heat to medium-low and, if needed, add a small dot of butter or a light spray of oil to the skillet so the egg doesn't stick (use some of the reserved butter or the remaining oil).

6

Fry egg (sunny-side or over-easy)

Crack 1 large egg into a small bowl to check for shells, then gently slide the egg into the skillet. Season with a pinch of salt and black pepper. For sunny-side-up: cook undisturbed 2-3 minutes until whites are set but yolk is runny. For over-easy: cook 2 minutes until whites set, carefully flip with a spatula and cook 15-30 seconds more for a runny yolk. For a firmer yolk, cook longer to desired doneness.

7

Finish

When the egg is cooked to your liking, slide it onto the plate with the warm sausage and buttered toast. If using, add a small spoonful of ketchup or a few drops of hot sauce on the side or atop the sausage.
