Method
Toast
Prepare and toast
Place the slice of bread in a toaster and toast to your desired doneness (light to medium recommended). If you don't have a toaster, heat a small nonstick skillet over medium and spread 1/2 tsp butter on one side of the bread; place buttered side down and cook 1–2 minutes until golden, then flip briefly to toast the other side.
Ham
Heat and brown ham
Heat a nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add 1/2 tsp butter or a light coating of oil and let it melt. Add the 2 slices of ham in a single layer. Cook 1–1.5 minutes per side until edges begin to brown and the ham is warmed through. Remove ham to a plate and keep warm.
Egg
Fry the egg (sunny-side or over-easy)
In the same skillet (add remaining 1/2 tsp butter if needed), reduce heat to medium-low. Crack the single egg into a small bowl to check for shells, then gently slide it into the skillet. Sprinkle about 1/8–1/4 tsp salt and a pinch of black pepper over the egg. For sunny-side-up: cook 2.5–3.5 minutes until whites are set but yolk is runny. For over-easy: cook 2 minutes, gently flip with a spatula and cook 20–30 seconds more for a runny yolk. Adjust cook time for firmer yolk.
