Method
Prep & Make Garlic Butter
Preheat oven
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). If using broiler at the end, position rack about 6 inches from broiler element.
In a medium bowl, combine the softened butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, dried oregano, salt, black pepper, and lemon juice (if using). Mix thoroughly until well blended and smooth.
Assemble Bread
Cut the loaf in half lengthwise through the center so you have two long halves with cut sides facing up.
Evenly sprinkle the shredded mozzarella over both halves, dividing it so each half has a uniform layer. Next, sprinkle the grated Parmesan evenly on top of the mozzarella. If using cheddar, sprinkle it now as well.
Bake & Finish
Place the assembled halves on a baking sheet lined with parchment or foil for easier cleanup. Bake in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling and the butter has soaked into the bread slightly.
For a golden-brown, slightly charred top, switch to broil for 1–2 minutes—watch closely to prevent burning. Alternatively, leave under the oven's heat until desired browning is reached.
Remove from the oven. If desired, sprinkle red pepper flakes lightly over the hot cheese for a touch of heat and an additional pinch of chopped parsley for freshness.
Let the bread rest 2 minutes, then slice into 1- to 1.5-inch pieces and serve warm.
