Basic toast

Method

Basic toast

1

Preheat

If using a toaster oven or broiler, preheat to medium-high (about 350–375°F / 175–190°C). If using a pop-up toaster, no preheating is needed.

2

Place the bread slices in a toaster or on a baking sheet for the oven. Toast until golden brown and edges are crisp — typically 2–4 minutes in a pop-up toaster, 4–6 minutes per side under a broiler or in a skillet, or 6–8 minutes in a toaster oven depending on desired darkness.

3

Remove toast and let sit for 30 seconds so steam escapes (this helps prevent sogginess when spreading jam).

4

If using butter or olive oil, spread about 1/2 tablespoon on each slice while still warm so it melts in evenly.

Jam

5

Spoon 1 tablespoon of jam onto each slice of warm toast. Use the back of the spoon to spread an even layer about 1/8–1/4 inch (2–4 mm) thick. If jam is very thick and difficult to spread, microwave the jar (or a small bowl of jam) for 5–10 seconds to loosen, stir, then spread.

6

If using lemon zest, sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon of zest over each slice after spreading the jam to brighten the flavor.

Optional toppings

7

If adding fresh fruit, arrange the slices or berries evenly on top of the jam (about 1/4 cup fruit per slice).

8

Sprinkle chopped nuts across the toast for crunch (about 1/2 teaspoon per slice).

9

If desired, lightly drizzle up to 1 teaspoon of honey across both slices and finish with a very small pinch of sea salt flakes to enhance flavor contrast.

10

Serve immediately so the toast remains crisp and the toppings are fresh.
