Fresh Orange Juice

Method

Fresh Orange Juice

1

Prepare oranges

Wash the oranges under cool running water. Roll each orange firmly on the counter with the palm of your hand to help release the juice. Cut each orange in half crosswise.

2

Juice the oranges

Using a citrus juicer (manual or electric), juice the orange halves until you have extracted as much liquid as possible. Strain the juice through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher if you prefer smoother juice without pulp. If you like pulp, skip the straining step.

3

Adjust sweetness and balance

Taste the juice. If it needs sweetening, stir in the granulated sugar (or simple syrup) until dissolved. If the juice is very sweet or very concentrated, add up to 1 cup cold water a little at a time until you reach the desired consistency and flavor. Add fresh lemon juice (about 1 tsp) if you want a brighter, more complex flavor.

4

Chill and serve

Add ice cubes to individual glasses or to the pitcher. Pour the orange juice over ice. Garnish each glass with an orange slice or a sprig of mint if desired. Serve immediately for best flavor.

5

Storage: Refrigerate any leftover juice in a sealed container for up to 48 hours; shake or stir before serving as separation may occur.
