Preparation

1

Heat water

Bring fresh water to a temperature between 175–185°F (80–85°C). If you don't have a thermometer, heat until just off a gentle boil (small bubbles) and let sit 20–30 seconds.

2

Brew espresso

Pull two standard espresso shots (about 2 oz total liquid) using freshly ground coffee and an espresso machine. If using a stovetop espresso maker (moka pot), brew a strong 2-ounce equivalent. Aim for a rich, concentrated extraction without bitterness.

3

Preheat cup

Preheat a 12 oz cup or mug by swirling a little hot water in it, then discard that water. This helps maintain temperature when assembling the Americano.

4

Assemble Americano

Pour the 9 oz of hot water into the prewarmed 12 oz cup first (this is the 'long' method that preserves crema). Immediately add the two espresso shots into the hot water. Alternatively, for a slightly bolder flavor and more crema disruption, pour the espresso into the cup first, then add the hot water. Stir gently once to combine.

5

Adjust & serve

Taste and adjust: serve as-is for a traditional Americano, or add sugar, milk, or cream to taste. Serve immediately while hot.
