Method

Preparation

1

Gather tools

Place a butter knife or spatula, a small plate, and a cutting board (if slicing banana) on your work surface.

2

If using a banana, peel and slice it into thin rounds on the cutting board; set aside.

Assemble sandwich

3

Spread peanut butter

Using a clean knife or spatula, scoop about 2 tablespoons of peanut butter and spread an even layer over one side of one bread slice. Cover the entire slice edge-to-edge for best texture and to help seal in the jelly.

4

Spread jelly

With a different knife (or wiped clean), spread about 2 tablespoons of jam or jelly evenly on one side of the second bread slice. If the jam is very runny, use slightly less to avoid soggy bread.

5

Add optional fillings

If using banana slices, arrange them in a single layer on top of the peanut butter. If using honey or a pinch of salt, drizzle or sprinkle lightly over the banana or peanut butter now.

6

Combine and press

Place the jelly-topped slice on top of the peanut butter–topped slice with the spreads facing each other. Press gently to adhere the layers.

Finishing (optional)

7

Cut sandwich

Place the sandwich on a plate and, using a sharp knife, cut it diagonally or down the middle, according to preference.

8

Toast or grill (optional)

If you prefer a warm, toasted sandwich: spread 1 teaspoon of butter on the outer faces of both bread slices before assembling, or butter lightly after assembling. Heat a skillet over medium heat and toast 2–3 minutes per side until golden and slightly crisp. Alternatively, use a panini press for 3–4 minutes until warm and toasty.
