Cocktail
Muddle
Place the mint leaves in the bottom of a mixing glass or shaker. Add the simple syrup and gently muddle the mint 3–4 times to release aromatic oils. Avoid over-muddling to prevent bitterness.
Combine
Add Jack Daniel's Whiskey (2 oz), freshly squeezed lemon juice (0.75 oz), and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters to the muddled mint and syrup in the shaker.
Shake
Fill the shaker with ice, cap, and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the exterior of the shaker is cold and slightly frosted.
Prepare glass
If serving over ice: fill a rocks glass with large ice cubes. If serving straight up: chill a coupe or cocktail glass and strain into it.
Strain & Pour
Double-strain the contents of the shaker through a fine mesh strainer (or use the shaker’s strainer) into the prepared glass over fresh ice. This removes mint bits and broken ice for a clean drink.
Optional top
If you prefer a lighter, slightly fizzy drink, top with ~1 oz club soda. Gently stir once to combine.
Garnish
Slap the mint sprig between your palms to wake the aromatics and place it as a garnish on top of the cocktail.
