Bread & Topping Base
Preheat and prepare loaf
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
Make garlic butter
In a small saucepan over low heat (or in a microwave-safe bowl), combine unsalted butter and olive oil until butter is melted. Remove from heat and stir in minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes so the garlic infuses the butter.
Prepare bread
Slice the baguette in half lengthwise to create two long halves, or cut into 1-inch thick diagonal slices keeping the bottom attached for pull-apart style. If you want crispier interior, hollow out a small trench along the center of each half to hold more topping.
Cheese & Finish
Assemble cheesy bread
Evenly sprinkle shredded mozzarella over the buttered cut sides of the bread, pressing lightly so cheese adheres. Scatter grated Parmesan over the mozzarella, and sprinkle red pepper flakes evenly for a touch of heat. If using sliced basil, tuck thin slices under the cheese or scatter on top now (or add after baking for a fresher herb flavor).
Bake
Place the assembled bread on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes, until cheese is melted and beginning to bubble. For a golden, slightly charred top, switch the oven to broil high for 1–2 minutes — watch closely to prevent burning.
Finish and serve
Remove from oven and immediately brush reserved garlic butter over any exposed crust for extra flavor. If you did not add fresh basil before baking, scatter basil now. Let the bread rest 2 minutes, then slice into desired portions (if whole halves, slice crosswise into 2-inch pieces). Serve warm as an appetizer.
