Base materials

Prepare workspace
Clear a flat surface and place the cutting mat. Arrange scissors, craft blade, ruler and pencil within reach.

Cut cardboard base
From the corrugated cardboard sheet, cut a rectangle 9 x 6 inches using the ruler and craft blade on the cutting mat. This will be the main platform for the Orpedo Crafts project.

Cut cardstock panels
Trim four sheets of cardstock into panels: two 4.5 x 6 inches (front/back cover), and two 4.5 x 2.5 inches (side panels). Use the metal ruler and pencil to mark straight lines before cutting.

Prepare dowels
Cut the three wooden dowels into lengths: one 9" (spine support), two 3.5" (hinge pins). Sand any rough ends lightly if needed.

Foam cushioning
Cut two foam sheet strips 9 x 1 inches to act as cushioning or raised detail along the base edges.

Glue foam to base
Apply a thin bead of PVA glue along the 9" edges of the cardboard base and press the foam strips into place. Let dry 10–15 minutes with light weight on top.

Attach cardstock panels
Spread a thin layer of PVA glue or use double-sided tape on the back of the two 4.5 x 6" cardstock panels and adhere them to the top and bottom of the cardboard base to cover it. Smooth out air bubbles and allow to set for 5–10 minutes.

Add side panels
Attach the two 4.5 x 2.5" side panels along the short edges of the base using double-sided tape for an even seam. Reinforce with a small dab of hot glue at the corners if necessary (use a controlled amount to avoid warping).

Mount spine dowel
Position the 9" dowel centrally along the underside of the base as a structural spine. Use hot glue at three points (center and both ends) to secure. If you prefer removable support, attach with brackets or strong double-sided tape instead.

Insert hinge pins
Mark two hinge positions near the front edge about 1.25" in from each side. Pierce small pilot holes through the cardstock and cardboard with the craft blade and push the two 3.5" dowels through, fastening with small brads or split pins on both faces so they act as rotating hinge pins for attached decorative elements.

Trim and neaten edges
Carefully trim any overhanging foam or cardstock with the craft blade. Use the metal ruler to guide straight cuts so edges are clean.

Reinforce joints
Where the side panels meet the base and spine, reinforce inside seams with thin strips of double-sided tape and a small bead of PVA glue. Wipe off excess glue immediately with a damp cloth.

Attach eye screws (optional)
If using eye screws for hanging or attaching embellishments, mark and pre-drill small pilot holes and screw them gently into the cardboard-backed areas or into the ends of dowels. Use only light torque to avoid tearing the board.

Prime and paint
Apply an even base coat of acrylic paint to the visible cardstock surfaces. For best coverage, use two thin coats, allowing 10–15 minutes dry time between coats. Use the smaller brush for edges and detail work.

Add patterns and details
Use washi tape to create clean stripes or borders. Draw fine-line details, accents and mimic mechanical markings with permanent markers. Add painted highlights or faux rivets with a small round brush.

Attach embellishments
Glue googly eyes, small bells or other ornaments to desired locations using hot glue. For moving parts attached to hinge dowels, ensure glue does not obstruct rotation.

Seal
Once all paint and glue are fully dry (30–60 minutes), apply a light coat of clear matte sealer spray outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Let cure according to can directions (usually 15–30 minutes).

Add elastic details
Thread thin elastic through eye screws to create loops, handles or tensioned elements. Tie secure knots and tuck ends into a dab of hot glue for neatness.

Functional testing
Test any moving parts (hinge dowels, bells, elastic loops) to ensure they move freely and are securely attached. Adjust glue or brad tightness as needed.

Final inspection
Inspect the Orpedo Crafts piece for loose bits, sharp edges or excess glue. Trim and touch up paint where necessary. Let the entire project rest for an hour before displaying or gifting.
