Method
Preparation
- 1
Press Tofu
Begin by draining the firm tofu and pressing it between paper towels or a clean kitchen towel to remove excess moisture. Place something heavy on top, like a cast-iron skillet, for about 15-20 minutes.
- 2
Prepare Miso Glaze
In a bowl, whisk together the miso paste and soy sauce until smooth. This will be your glaze for the tofu.
- 3
Cut Tofu
Once the tofu is pressed, cut it into bite-sized cubes (about 1-inch pieces) for even cooking.
Coating and Cooking
- 4
Coat Tofu
In a large bowl, gently toss the tofu cubes with the miso glaze until they are evenly coated. Let them marinate for about 10-15 minutes.
- 5
Prepare Batter
In a separate bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, salt, black pepper, and water until a smooth batter forms.
- 6
Heat Oil
Heat the vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. Ensure the oil is hot enough for frying by checking with a small drop of batter; it should sizzle immediately.
- 7
Batter and Fry
Dip each miso-glazed tofu cube into the batter, allowing excess to drip off, then carefully drop them into the hot oil. Fry in batches for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
- 8
Drain Excess Oil
Once cooked, remove the tofu bites and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.
- 9
Garnish
Chop the green onions finely and sprinkle them over the cooked tofu bites as a garnish.
