Method
Cheeses
Prepare cheeses
Remove all cheeses from the refrigerator 30–60 minutes before serving to come to room temperature. This enhances flavors and textures.
Place the whole brie on the board; score the rind lightly with a small X so guests can easily spread. Slice or crumble the cheddar into bite-sized chunks or thin wedges. Crumble or slice the blue cheese into small pieces and place in a separate small pile so its strong flavor doesn't overwhelm milder cheeses.
Charcuterie
Arrange meats
Fan or fold prosciutto slices into loose rosettes and arrange on the board. Fold or roll soppressata/salami slices into small stacks or cones for easy picking. Place coppa or chorizo in a separate area so guests can clearly see the variety.
Breads & Crackers
Arrange toasted baguette slices and assorted crackers in small stacks or fanned groups around the cheeses and meats for easy reach.
Fresh Fruit & Produce
Prep fruit
Wash grapes and pat dry; leave on stems or remove a few small clusters for easier serving. Core and thinly slice apple and pear; toss apple slices in a small bowl with a squeeze of lemon if you want to reduce browning (optional). If using figs, halve them; if using strawberries, hull and halve.
Arrange fruit in small clusters or fan slices near cheeses that complement them (e.g., apples with cheddar, figs with blue cheese).
Pickles, Spreads & Nuts
Prepare condiments
Pour honey into a small ramekin or jar and crack a little black pepper over the top if desired. Place fig jam and Dijon mustard each in small bowls with separate spoons. Drain cornichons and place in a small pile. Fill a small bowl with Marcona almonds or mixed nuts.
Assembly & Garnish
Assemble the board
Start by placing the cheeses spaced across the board to create anchors. Place small bowls/ramekins with honey, jam, mustard, and nuts near cheeses they pair with. Arrange meats around cheeses, then tuck crackers and baguette slices into empty spaces. Fill gaps with fruit clusters and cornichons. Add rosemary or thyme sprigs as garnish for color and aroma.
Add small cheese knives or spreaders near each cheese and provide toothpicks for meats and pickles. Adjust layout for balance and visual appeal—vary shapes, colors, and heights so the board looks abundant and inviting.
Serve immediately at room temperature. Estimated remaining shelf life: consume within 2–4 hours for best quality; refrigerate leftovers promptly and cover cheeses separately.
