Method
Cocktail
Chill glass
Place a martini or coupe glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure the drink stays cold.
Prepare lychee
If using fresh or canned whole lychees, drain (reserve a little syrup if using canned for added sweetness if desired). Peel and pit one lychee; set aside for garnish. If using canned lychee juice, measure out 1 oz.
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz vodka, 0.5 oz lychee liqueur (or 0.5 oz lychee syrup), 1 oz lychee juice/nectar, 0.25 oz dry vermouth (optional), 0.25 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.25 tsp simple syrup only if the lychee juice is not sweet enough. Add 6 ice cubes to the shaker.
Shake
Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes very cold and a good frost forms. This both chills and slightly dilutes the cocktail for balance.
Strain
Discard the ice or water from the chilled glass. Using a Hawthorne or fine strainer, double-strain the cocktail into the chilled martini or coupe glass to remove any small ice chips and fruit bits for a clean appearance.
Garnish
Skewer the reserved peeled lychee on a cocktail pick and rest it across the rim or drop it into the center of the drink. Optionally add a lime twist or wheel on the rim for aroma and color.
Serve
Serve immediately while cold. Stirring is unnecessary—this cocktail is served shaken.
