Method
Cocktail
- 1
Muddle basil
Place 6 fresh basil leaves into a cocktail shaker. Add the simple syrup and gently muddle the leaves 6–8 times until aromatic and the leaves are bruised but not shredded. Muddling releases basil oils that will flavor the drink.
- 2
Add liquids and bitters
Add 2 oz Basil Hayden bourbon, 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters to the shaker with the muddled basil and syrup.
- 3
Shake with ice
Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup) and secure the lid. Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is cold and frosty. This chills and dilutes the cocktail to balance the flavors.
- 4
Double strain and serve
Double-strain the cocktail into a chilled old-fashioned glass over one large ice cube or a few large ice cubes. Double-straining (using the shaker strainer and a fine mesh strainer) removes small bits of basil for a cleaner texture.
Garnish
- 5
Express the oils from a lemon twist over the surface of the drink by holding the twist skin-side down and giving it a quick pinch above the glass, then optionally rub the twist along the rim and drop it into the drink. Slap the basil sprig gently between your palms to release aroma and place it as a garnish. Serve immediately.
