1

Chill glass

Place a rocks glass or short Old Fashioned glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill the glass.

2

Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or shaker filled halfway with ice cubes, pour 2 oz London dry gin, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 0.5 oz Campari, and add 2 dashes of orange bitters.

3

Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture briskly for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full revolutions) until well chilled and slightly diluted (the mixing glass should feel very cold).

4

Prepare serving glass

Discard the chilling ice or remove the glass from the freezer. Add one large clear ice cube to the chilled rocks glass.

5

Strain and garnish

Double-strain the stirred cocktail into the glass over the large ice cube using a julep or Hawthorne strainer. Express the oils of an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the surface and giving it a firm twist, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass as a garnish.

6

Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy the bittersweet, herbal interplay of gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari.
