Tea Base
Sweeteners & Soothers
Spirit & Garnish (optional)
Optional Add-ins for Soothing
Method
Prepare Tea Base
Heat water and infuse
Pour 2 cups of fresh cold water into a small saucepan. Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
When water reaches a rolling simmer, add the grated ginger and the 2 tablespoons of black tea (use a tea infuser, tea bags, or loose leaf in a strainer). Reduce heat to low and simmer gently for 3 minutes to extract ginger flavor without too much bitterness from the tea.
After 3 minutes, remove from heat, cover the pan, and let steep for an additional 3 minutes for stronger flavor.
Combine & Sweeten
Strain the brewed tea into a heatproof mug or small pitcher to remove tea leaves and ginger solids.
While the liquid is still hot, stir in 2 tablespoons honey until fully dissolved. If using, add 1 teaspoon maple syrup for depth and stir to combine.
Add 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice and stir. Taste and adjust: add more honey if you prefer sweeter, or more lemon for brightness.
Finish & Serve
If using alcohol, add 1 oz whiskey, bourbon, or dark rum to the mug and stir gently to combine with the hot tea (alcohol is optional and can be omitted for a non-alcoholic toddy).
Garnish with a lemon wheel or twist and a cinnamon stick if desired. Add fresh mint leaves or a pinch of cayenne now if you want the additional soothing or warming elements—gently bruise the mint before adding to release oils.
Serve immediately while hot. Sip slowly to enjoy the warming, throat-soothing benefits.
