Sweet Potatoes

Topping (choose one or combine)

Method

Prepare and Bake Sweet Potatoes

1

Preheat and wash

Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C). Scrub the sweet potatoes thoroughly under running water to remove dirt. Pat dry with a clean towel.

2

Pierce potatoes

Use a fork to prick each sweet potato all over (6–8 times) to allow steam to escape during baking.

3

Oil and season (optional)

Rub each sweet potato lightly with 1 teaspoon neutral oil (optional) and sprinkle a pinch of kosher salt over the skins to help crisp them during baking.

4

Bake

Place sweet potatoes directly on the oven rack or on a rimmed baking sheet lined with foil. Bake at 400°F (205°C) for 45–60 minutes, depending on size, until a knife or fork inserted into the center meets no resistance and flesh is tender.

5

Rest

Remove from oven and let sit 5 minutes until cool enough to handle but still hot inside.

Finish and Serve

6

Split and fluff

Using a sharp knife, cut a lengthwise slit in the top of each sweet potato. Press the ends gently toward each other to open the cavity and fluff the flesh slightly with a fork.

7

Butter & brown sugar option

For the classic buttery brown sugar version: divide the 4 tablespoons unsalted butter among the 4 potatoes (1 Tbsp each), then sprinkle 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar over each. Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon across the 4 potatoes (about 1/4 tsp total) or divide as preferred. The residual heat will melt the butter and dissolve the sugar; if you prefer a more melted topping, return potatoes to the oven for 3–5 minutes.

8

Caramel or maple option

For a caramel finish: spoon 1 tablespoon maple syrup or warm caramel sauce over each opened potato. If using chilled caramel sauce, warm it briefly in the microwave (10–15 seconds) so it pours easily.

9

Optional pecan garnish

If using, sprinkle about 2 tablespoons chopped pecans on each potato after adding the sugar/butter or caramel for crunch.

10

Season to taste & serve

Taste and, if desired, add a light pinch of kosher salt to each finished potato to balance sweetness. Serve hot.
