Method
Espresso
- 1
Preheat and dose
Preheat your espresso portafilter and serving cup by rinsing with hot water. Dose 18 g of freshly ground espresso into the portafilter; distribute and tamp evenly to a firm, level puck.
- 2
Brew espresso
Brew a single or double shot of espresso aiming for about 30 ml extraction in ~25–30 seconds (adjust grind and dose if timing is far off). Pour the extracted espresso directly into the warmed serving cup.
Hot water
- 3
Heat 120 ml of filtered water to just off-boil (90–96°C / 195–205°F). Pour the hot water into the cup containing the espresso. Standard ratio here is roughly 1:4 espresso to hot water, but adjust to taste.
- 4
Stir gently once to combine. Taste and adjust strength by adding a small splash more hot water for a milder drink or use slightly less water for a bolder Americano.
Optional finishing
- 5
If desired, sweeten with sugar or simple syrup to taste. For a citrus note, express a lemon peel over the cup and drop it in as a garnish.
- 6
Serve immediately while hot. Provide a small spoon for stirring if sweetener is added.
