Method

Prepare Shot

  1. 1

    Measure and dissolve

Add the activated charcoal powder to a small mixing cup or jar. Pour in the fresh coconut water (4 oz). Stir briskly with a small spoon or whisk for 20–30 seconds until the charcoal is uniformly suspended. If using honey or agave, add it now and stir until combined.

  2. 2

    Acid and salt

Add the fresh lime juice (1/2 tsp) and a pinch (about 1/4 tsp) of fine sea salt to the mixture. Stir another 10–15 seconds. The lime brightens the flavor and the salt balances taste; both are optional but recommended.

  3. 3

    Optional chilling

If you prefer the shot cold, add 1–2 small ice cubes to the mixture and stir 10 seconds, then strain out the melting ice to avoid diluting the shot too much. Alternatively chill the coconut water ahead of time and omit ice.

  4. 4

    Serve

Pour or carefully spoon the mixture into a small shot glass (about 1.5–2 oz capacity). Garnish the rim with a lime wheel or wedge. Consume immediately. Activated charcoal will settle over time, so give it a quick stir if it stands before drinking.

Notes & Safety

  1. 5

Activated charcoal can interfere with absorption of medications and supplements. Do not drink this shot within 2 hours before or after taking any prescription drugs. Use food-grade charcoal and limit use to occasional consumption. If pregnant, nursing, or on medications, consult a healthcare professional before using activated charcoal.
