Coffee

Garnish & Optional Extras

Method

Coffee

  1. 1

Brew decaf espresso or strong decaf coffee

Brew 1 cup of very strong decaf coffee or prepare two 1-oz shots of decaf espresso (total ≈ 1 cup when combined with a small amount of water if desired). If using an espresso machine, use the 0.5 tsp freshly ground decaf espresso to pull two small shots. Keep the coffee hot.

Liqueur & Sweeteners

  1. 2

Warm and dissolve sugar with liqueur

In a small saucepan or frothing pitcher over low heat, combine 1.5 tbs Licor 43 (or substitute) and 1 tsp brown sugar. Add the optional star anise if using. Warm gently, stirring until the sugar dissolves and the liqueur is fragrant (about 1–2 minutes). Do not boil — you only want to warm and meld flavors.

  2. 3

    Combine coffee and liqueur

Pour the hot decaf coffee or espresso into a preheated heatproof glass or mug. Add the warmed Licor 43 and dissolved sugar mixture. Stir gently to combine.

Finish & Garnish

  1. 4

Express the oils of the orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down above the cup and giving it a quick twist, then drop it in as a garnish.

  2. 5

Float three whole coffee beans on top or place them on the surface for presentation. If you warmed the star anise, you may use it as a garnish as well.

  3. 6

Serve immediately while hot. Offer a small spoon for stirring.
