Cocktail
- 1
Stirred, up (classic preparation)
Chill a coupe or small cocktail glass by placing it in the freezer for a few minutes or filling it with ice water while you prepare the drink. Fill a mixing glass with ice (about 3 large cubes). Add 2 fl oz cognac or brandy and 1 fl oz Bénédictine liqueur to the mixing glass. Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (the mixing glass should feel cold to the touch). Discard the ice or water from the chilled serving glass. Strain the stirred mixture into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass using a Hawthorne or julep strainer. Express an orange or lemon twist over the surface of the drink to release the citrus oils, then rub the rim lightly with the twist and drop it into the glass (or rest it on the rim) as garnish.

On the rocks (alternative)
If you prefer the drink over ice, fill an old-fashioned glass with fresh ice. Pour 2 fl oz cognac and 1 fl oz Bénédictine directly over the ice. Stir once or twice to combine and slightly chill. Garnish with an expressed orange or lemon twist.

Serve immediately. The classic B&B is best enjoyed neat (up) or gently chilled on the rocks; the cognac provides structure while the Bénédictine adds herbal sweetness. Adjust the ratio slightly to taste (some prefer equal parts).
