Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

1

Measure and combine

Add 1.5 oz Ron Zacapa 23 rum, 0.75 oz Cynar, 0.25 tsp simple syrup, 2 dashes orange bitters and 1 dash Angostura bitters into a mixing glass.

2

Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice and stir gently for about 20–30 seconds (15–20 full revolutions) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted.

3

Prepare glass

Place a single large ice cube into a chilled old-fashioned glass.

4

Strain

Strain the stirred cocktail over the large ice cube into the prepared old-fashioned glass.

Garnish & Finish

5

Orange twist

Express the orange peel over the cocktail to spray oils onto the surface, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass.

6

Laphroaig spray

Place a small dropper or atomizer about 6–8 inches from the drink. Using approximately 1 tsp (or 1 short spray) of Laphroaig, lightly mist the top of the cocktail once or twice. If using a bottle, pour 1/4 tsp into the palm, cup the palm over the glass and quickly waft the smoke toward the drink to impart a delicate peat aroma. The idea is a light smoky veil — do not overpower.

7

Optional cigar/serve

Present with a lit cigar or a burnt cedar/wood element for the table if desired (optional). Advise the guest to take small sips to enjoy the interplay of Zacapa sweetness, Cynar bitterness and Laphroaig smoke.
