Assembly & Finish

Preparation

Julep Base

1. Muddle blackberries and mint

Place the 6 fresh blackberries and 10 fresh mint leaves into a julep cup or sturdy mixing glass. Add the 0.5 oz simple syrup. Use a muddler to gently press and twist until the blackberries are broken down and the mint releases aroma, about 8–12 gentle presses. Avoid over-muddling the mint to prevent bitterness.

2. Add whiskey

Pour 3 oz Clyde May's Alabama Style Whiskey into the mixing vessel with the muddled fruit and mint. Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 10 seconds to combine flavors.

Assembly & Finish

3. Prepare glass

Fill a julep cup or old-fashioned glass about three-quarters full with crushed ice to chill the vessel.

4. Combine and top

Strain the muddled whiskey mixture over the crushed ice using a fine mesh strainer (to catch seeds) while pressing lightly on solids to extract liquid. Top the drink with 2 oz soda water. Gently stir once or twice to integrate, taking care not to overly dilute.

5. Garnish and optional bitters

Add a sprig of fresh mint and 2–3 whole blackberries as garnish. If desired, add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters on top of the crushed ice for aromatic complexity.

6. Serve

Insert a straw if desired and serve immediately while the crushed ice is very cold. Encourage the drinker to lightly clap the mint between hands to release extra aroma before placing it in the glass.
