Coffee and Water
Equipment & optional additions
Method
Prepare beans and water
Measure beans and water
Weigh 30 g (0.03 kg) of whole coffee beans for one to two cups (this yields a brew ratio ~1:16 resulting in about 500 ml brewed coffee). Measure 500 ml filtered water.
Heat water
Bring the measured water to a boil and then allow it to rest until the temperature is about 92–96°C (195–205°F). If you don't have a thermometer, let the water sit for 30 seconds after boiling.
Grind and load
Grind beans
Grind the 30 g of beans immediately before brewing. Use a medium-coarse grind for pour-over or drip, coarse for French press, and fine for AeroPress (adjust according to your chosen brewer). The grind should be even.
Prepare filter and brewer
If using a paper filter (pour-over or drip), place it in the brewer and rinse with hot water to remove paper taste and preheat the brewer. Discard rinse water. If using French press, preheat the carafe with hot water and discard.
Brew
Bloom (for pour-over/drip)
Place ground coffee in the brewer (30 g). Start a timer. Pour about 60 ml of hot water evenly over the grounds to saturate them. Allow coffee to bloom for 30–45 seconds to release CO2.
Continue pouring (pour-over) or steep (French press/AeroPress)
Pour the remaining water in slow, steady concentric circles for pour-over, finishing at about 2:30–3:30 minutes total brew time. For French press, pour all water over grounds, stir gently, place the lid with plunger up, and steep 4 minutes before plunging slowly. For AeroPress, follow device instructions — typically steep 1–2 minutes and press.
Complete extraction
Allow the brewed coffee to drain fully (if pour-over/drip) or press the filter/plunger (AeroPress/French press). Aim for total contact time appropriate to your method: 2:30–3:30 minutes pour-over, 4 minutes French press, 1–2 minutes AeroPress (inverted or standard technique).
Serve and customize
Pour
Pour the brewed coffee into a warmed cup. If making two smaller cups, split evenly.
Clean up
Discard grounds and used filter or rinse the French press/AeroPress. Rinse equipment to prevent stale residue.
