Method
Prepare Bread & Dressing
Warm and slice roll
If desired, warm the sub roll in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 3–5 minutes to make it slightly crisp. Using a serrated knife, slice the roll lengthwise, leaving a small hinge if you like so fillings don’t fall out.
Make spread
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, yellow mustard, olive oil, and red wine vinegar. Whisk briefly until smooth. Spread the mixture evenly on both cut faces of the roll.
Assemble Meats & Cheese
Arrange the deli ham in a single folded layer along the bottom half of the roll so it covers the length of the bread. Place the pepperoni slices on top of the ham, distributing them evenly.
Add the mozzarella: either lay sliced mozzarella over the meats or sprinkle shredded mozzarella evenly. If you prefer melted cheese, place the open sandwich on a baking sheet and broil or bake briefly (2–3 minutes) until the cheese softens — watch carefully to avoid burning.
Add Produce & Seasoning
Place the tomato slices on top of the cheese/meat layer, spacing them evenly. Sprinkle the tomato with salt and black pepper.
Top with shredded lettuce, distributing it evenly across the sandwich length.
Finish & Serve
Close the roll gently but firmly to compress the fillings slightly. If you warmed the sandwich for melted cheese earlier, let it rest 30 seconds before slicing. Cut the sub in half on the bias if desired, and serve immediately.
