Method
Prepare ingredients
Gather tools
Place a clean cutting board, a butter knife or spreader, a spoon for jelly, and a plate on your workspace. Have the bread, peanut butter, and jelly within reach.
If using banana, peel and slice it into approximately 1/4-inch (6 mm) rounds and place on the plate.
Assemble sandwich
Spread peanut butter
Lay the two slices of bread flat on the cutting board. Using the butter knife, scoop about 2 tablespoons of peanut butter and spread it evenly across one slice of bread, covering the surface nearly to the edges. If you prefer thicker peanut butter, add another 1 tablespoon and spread to even thickness.
Spread jelly
With a clean spoon or a second knife, scoop about 2 tablespoons of jelly and spread it evenly on the other slice of bread, covering it nearly to the edges. Use more or less to taste, but avoid overfilling to prevent spilling when closing the sandwich.
Add optional fillings
If using banana slices, arrange them in a single layer on top of the peanut butter. Drizzle honey or sprinkle a tiny pinch of salt if desired.
Close and press
Place the jelly-covered slice on top of the peanut-butter-covered slice so the spreads face each other. Press gently to seal the sandwich. If you want neat edges, trim the crusts with a serrated knife.
Finish (optional)
Toasting or grilling (optional)
If you prefer a warm sandwich, melt 1 teaspoon of butter in a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Place the sandwich in the skillet and toast for 2–3 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula, until golden brown and the peanut butter is slightly softened. Alternatively, use a sandwich press for 3–4 minutes.
Cut the sandwich in half diagonally or down the middle and serve immediately.
