Method
Prep
Gather ingredients and preheat your cooking method. If boiling, bring a medium pot of water to a gentle simmer. If grilling, preheat grill to medium-high. If pan-frying, heat a large skillet over medium heat with 1 tablespoon neutral oil.
If serving diced onion, peel and finely dice enough white onion to yield about 1/2 cup. Place mustard, ketchup, and relish in small bowls for easy assembly.
Cook the sausages
Boiling (gentlest)
Place sausages in simmering (not rolling-boil) water and cook 5–7 minutes until heated through. Remove with tongs and drain on paper towels.
Grilling (recommended for char flavor)
Place sausages on preheated grill over medium-high heat. Turn every 1–2 minutes to get even char and heat through, about 6–8 minutes total. Remove when internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) for pork/beef or per package instructions.
Pan-frying (quick, crispy exterior)
Add 1 tablespoon oil to hot skillet. Place sausages and cook, turning occasionally, until browned and cooked through, about 6–8 minutes. For snap, slice light diagonal slits in the sausages before cooking.
Toast the buns
Optional but recommended: spread about 1/2 tablespoon butter on the cut sides of each bun. Toast buttered buns on the grill grates or in a skillet cut-side down until golden, about 1–2 minutes. If using an oven, place buns cut-side up under broiler 30–60 seconds—watch closely.
Assemble
Place a hot dog sausage in each toasted bun. Add toppings: 1 tablespoon mustard, 1 tablespoon ketchup, 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish per dog, and about 2 tablespoons diced onion per dog (or to taste).
Serve
Serve hot immediately with sides such as chips, fries, or a simple salad. Offer extra condiments on the side.
