Method
Hot Dogs
Prepare water and cook hot dogs
Pour 1 cup of water into a medium nonstick skillet or saucepan. Place over medium heat until the water is simmering (small bubbles around the edge). Add the 4 hot dogs to the pan, reduce heat to medium-low, cover with a lid, and steam for 5 minutes to heat through. Turn the hot dogs once halfway through to ensure even heating. If you prefer to boil, use a pot with enough water to cover sausages and simmer for 5–6 minutes.
Brown hot dogs (optional)
After steaming, remove the lid and increase heat to medium. Allow remaining water to evaporate and let the hot dogs sear gently for 1 minute per side, turning with tongs to get a light brown color. Be careful to avoid burning.
Warm the buns
While hot dogs are finishing, spread 2 tablespoons softened butter evenly inside each of the 4 buns (about 1/2 tablespoon per side). Place buns butter-side down in a separate dry skillet over medium-low heat for about 1 minute per side until lightly toasted and warm. Alternatively, wrap buns in foil and warm in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 5 minutes.
Toppings (Kid-friendly)
Measure and set out toppings in small bowls so kids can choose. For safety with younger children, chop pickle slices into smaller pieces or use relish instead. If you want melted cheese, sprinkle shredded cheddar over the hot dogs immediately after assembly and place under a broiler or in a microwave for 10–15 seconds until slightly melted (watch closely).
Optional sides
Rinse and arrange baby carrots and apple slices on a small plate. If desired, toss apple slices with a few drops of lemon juice to keep them from browning. Serve alongside each hot dog for a balanced kid-friendly plate.
