Method

Prepare equipment and water

1

Gather and preheat

Gather a coffee grinder (if using whole beans), scale or measuring spoon, kettle, coffee maker or pour-over dripper with filter, a carafe or pot, and a mug. Pour 200 ml of filtered water into the kettle and heat to just below boiling (about 94–96°C / 200–205°F) to preheat the brewing vessel and filter.

2

Pour the heated 200 ml preheating water into the dripper or carafe and through the paper filter (if using) to rinse it and warm the vessel. Discard the rinse water.

Grind and measure coffee

3

Weigh and grind

Weigh 35 g (0.035 kg) of whole coffee beans for 500 ml of brewed coffee (ratio ~1:14). Grind the beans to a medium-coarse grind for pour-over/drip, or medium for automatic drip. If using a French press, grind coarser; for espresso, use a fine grind and smaller yield.

4

Place the ground coffee in the pre-warmed filter or coffee maker basket and gently level the grounds so water will contact them evenly.

Bloom and brew

5

Bloom

Start the timer. Pour 60–80 ml of hot water (about double the weight of grounds) evenly over the grounds to saturate them. Let the coffee bloom for 30–45 seconds to allow CO2 to escape — you should see bubbling and expansion.

6

Continue pouring

After the bloom, slowly pour the remaining hot water in a steady spiral or slow pulses, keeping the water level consistent and avoiding pouring directly on the filter. Aim to finish pouring by 3–3.5 minutes total brew time for pour-over/drip methods. For automatic drip, start the machine and expect 4–6 minutes total brew time depending on equipment.

7

If using a French press, pour all the water, stir gently, place the lid with plunger up, and steep for 4 minutes before pressing. For immersion methods, adjust steep time accordingly.

Finish and serve

8

Drain and decant

Allow all water to pass through the grounds into the carafe. Remove the dripper and discard the used grounds and filter. If brewed in a French press, press the plunger down slowly and pour immediately to avoid over-extraction.

9

Taste the coffee. Add milk/cream (60 ml) and/or sweetener (1 tsp) as desired. Add a pinch (0.25 tsp) of salt if you want to soften bitterness. Stir and serve immediately.
