Method
Burger
Form patty
Divide the 0.25 lb ground beef into a single small ball and gently flatten into a 3–3.5 inch round patty about 1/2 inch thick. Avoid overworking the meat. Make a shallow 1/4-inch indentation in the center with your thumb to help the patty cook evenly.
Season
Season both sides of the patty with the salt (0.125 tsp) and black pepper (a light pinch, ~0.05 tsp). Press lightly so seasoning adheres.
Cook patty
Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add the vegetable oil (0.5 tsp) and swirl to coat. When the pan is hot (water drop should sizzle), place the patty in the pan. Cook undisturbed for 2.5–3 minutes until the underside is browned. Flip and cook 2–2.5 minutes more for a done-but-juicy small patty (internal temp ~160°F/71°C).
Add cheese
About 30–45 seconds before the patty is finished, place the cheddar cheese slice on top of the patty. Cover the pan with a lid or a large bowl for 30–45 seconds to help the cheese melt.
Rest patty
Remove the patty to a plate and let rest for 1 minute while you prepare the bun. Resting redistributes juices and keeps the burger juicy for a child-friendly bite.
Bun & Assembly
Toast and butter bun
Split the hamburger bun in half. Spread softened unsalted butter (0.5 tsp) lightly on the cut sides. Place cut-side down in the same skillet over medium-low heat for 30–45 seconds until lightly golden. Watch closely to avoid burning. Remove from heat.
Assemble burger
Spread ketchup (1 tsp) on the bottom bun and mustard (0.5 tsp) on top of the ketchup or on the top bun, based on preference. Place the lettuce leaf (if using) on the bottom bun, then the rested cheeseburger patty. Add the tomato slice and pickle slice (if using). Cap with the top bun.
Serve
Cut the assembled cheeseburger in half if desired for easier handling by small children. Serve warm. Offer mild sides appropriate for kids (apple slices, carrot sticks, or small fries).
