Paper and Adhesive

Method

Paper and Adhesive

  1. 1

    Prepare sheets

Using the ruler and pencil, measure and mark 3 x 3 inch (7.6 x 7.6 cm) squares on the colored paper. Stack paper if using a paper cutter and trim to size with the utility knife or paper cutter on the cutting mat to get clean edges. You should have 24 uniform squares.

  2. 2

    Prepare adhesive strips

If using pre-cut low-tack glue strips or double-sided repositionable tape, cut each strip to about 2.75 inches (7 cm) long so it fits along one edge of the 3 x 3 sheet. If using repositionable glue stick or spray: apply a thin, even layer to a strip about 0.5 inch (1.2 cm) high along the top edge of a backing sheet (see below) and let it become tacky per product instructions.

Backing and Cutting

  1. 3

    Cut and prepare backing

Cut the cardstock into 3 x 3 inch squares to match the paper sheets; these will serve as temporary backing as you apply adhesive. Cut one sheet of waxed paper or silicone liner into the same size squares or slightly larger to protect the adhesive while storing the pad.

  2. 4

    Attach adhesive to backing

Place a low-tack glue strip or a strip of double-sided repositionable tape along the top edge of each cardstock backing square. If you used spray or glue stick on the backing, ensure the adhesive strip is even and tacky but not wet. Leave about 1/8 inch (3 mm) margin from the edge so the adhesive remains neat.

Assembly

  1. 5

    Build the pad

Working one sheet at a time, align a colored paper square carefully over the backing with the adhesive strip at the top edge on the back of the sheet or on the backing beneath it (depending on your adhesive method). Press the top edge lightly onto the adhesive so only that top edge is adhered. Repeat stacking: add the next colored square on top, aligning edges exactly and pressing the top edge onto the adhesive so each sheet is attached along the same top edge. Continue until you reach the desired stack height (24 sheets).

  2. 6

    Press and set

Place the assembled pad under a flat weight (heavy book) for 10–15 minutes while pressing the glued edge with a foam roller or your fingers to ensure good contact. If you used repositionable spray or glue, allow the adhesive to set as per the product instructions (usually a few minutes to become tacky).

  3. 7

    Add protective liner

Cut a waxed paper or silicone liner square to lay over the adhesive edge to protect it until use. This keeps the adhesive from picking up dust and prevents accidental sticking when stored.

Finishing and Storage

  1. 8

    Trim and clean edges

If any edges are uneven after stacking, use the paper cutter to square the pad carefully. Wipe away any adhesive residue from the paper edges with a clean cloth or paper towel (use a small amount of water if the adhesive allows; check product label).

  2. 9

    Store and use

Store your Post-It pad on a cool, dry surface. To use, peel off the waxed paper liner, press the pad's top sheet onto the surface, then lift the next sheet when you need it—the low-tack adhesive will allow repositioning without residue. Reapply the liner when transporting to protect the adhesive.
